New Lancet Review Highlights Need for Better Autism Identification and Support

A review article published in The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health calls for improved identification and support for autistic individuals assigned female at birth, highlighting scientific gaps and areas needing greater clinical attention. The authors — an international group of autism researchers and clinicians — examine current evidence on autism diagnosis, services, and lived experience, and recommend strategies to reduce diagnostic delays and increase tailored support across the lifespan.

Key points from the review include:

  • Identification challenges: Females assigned at birth are often diagnosed later than males, due in part to masking behaviors and diagnostic criteria that may overlook sex-associated differences in autism presentation.
  • Clinical suggestions: The authors propose measures to enhance early and accurate diagnosis, including training clinicians to recognize diverse autism profiles and biases in assessment.
  • Support priorities: Alongside improved identification, the review emphasizes the need for individualized supports that reflect the strengths and challenges of autistic individuals assigned female at birth, as well as research that can guide effective service design.

At Autism Reimagined Center (ARC), we recognize that autism can present differently in each child. We focus on individualized assessment and goal setting, taking into account communication style, social presentation, strengths, and daily functioning needs. Our ABA programs are designed to support each child based on their unique profile rather than a one-size-fits-all model. By emphasizing early identification, careful evaluation, and tailored intervention plans, ARC aims to provide structured support that aligns with current research and promotes equitable access to care for all children.
