New Perspectives on Behavior Science Review Summarizes ABA Research for Children With Autism

A scoping review published in Perspectives on Behavior Science examined decades of research on Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and its effects on children and youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The authors analyzed studies published in peer-reviewed English-language journals across seven online databases to evaluate how ABA interventions affect key developmental outcomes.

The review classified outcomes into eight categories: cognitive skills, language ability, social and communication behavior, problem behavior, adaptive behavior, emotional development, autism symptoms, and quality of life. Improvements were reported in seven of these eight outcome categories across available research, suggesting that ABA-based approaches can be associated with positive changes in many areas of development for children and adolescents with autism.

However, the authors also noted important limitations in the existing literature. Only a small number of studies (about 4 % of the records analyzed) compared ABA interventions with control or alternative approaches and did not rely solely on mastery of specific tasks to define improvement. Additionally, none of the studies included direct measures of quality of life for the participants themselves. These gaps point to the need for larger, well-designed prospective studies that compare ABA with other interventions and assess broader real-world outcomes to better inform practice and policy.
